Progressive urban projects are bubbling up in all corners of the city, often ignored by the mainstream media. The New Urbanism Film Festival aims to change that with its Urbanism Filmmaking Challenge, a bold move to mix and mingle unsung urban heroes with up-and-coming videographers and get the word out that the future is here!

The deadline for this is tomorrow, September 30th, but the director is willing to accept late submissions. This is a chance for those of you with urbanist projects in Los Angeles to have a five-minute film made explaining your work. That’s not a bad deal for $35. Filmmakers, in turn, notch up another credit, and become eligible to win a $300 grand prize for best video, as well as a number of lesser prizes.

So what have you got? An urban garden in progress, an alley rehabilitation, a bikeway advocacy effort or a co-op bike repair center, a neighborhood-scale outreach program to homeless residents, a youth group, a bicycle delivery service, a community public space proposal, park improvement, street vendor safe zone—you name it; if it’s community-centerd and urban, it qualifies!

Urbanists and filmmakers unite; you have nothing to lose but your anonymity!

New Urbanism Film Festival Presents Its Urbanism Filmmaking Challenge

8/5/2015--FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Noodles & New Urbanism, an irreverent monthly meetup focusing on human-scale urban development, in collaboration with the New Urbanism Film Festival presents its brand-new Urbanism Filmmaking Challenge. This contest pairs filmmakers with local LA urbanists to create short (up to five minute) mini-docs exploring urban projects in the Los Angeles area. Working urbanists will present a short slideshow to an audience of filmmakers, who will then choose projects to document on video. This is done at a newsroom pace: filmmakers and urbanists meet on October 4th, and the resulting film swill be shown on October 11th. The ten best films will be screened during the New Urbanism Film Festival on October 11th, and prizes will be awarded immediately afterwards. Filmmakers and urbanists both are asked to enter this collaborative competition to reveal what's in the works for LA's future.

All films made as part of this contest will be hosted on the New Urbanism Film Festival website and/or YouTube channel. The New Urbanism Film Festival will also retain rights to screen the films at future NUFF events; however, filmmakers are welcome to host and screen their films at other venues and festivals on their own. NUFF does not hold exclusive rights.

About the New Urbanism Film Festival: The New Urbanism Film Festival is a four day immersion in documentary films, events, tours, workshops and conversations, one that opens meaningful dialogues about revitalizing neighborhoods and cities as walkable, healthy, diverse, thriving places. Planners, developers, architects, engineers, public officials, investors, community activists and the general public work and play together to explore better ways of building cities—or rebuilding them. The films come from around the planet, documenting everything from city-wide projects to individual DIY deals that make the world better one corner at a time. Don't miss the third annual New Urbanism Film Festival, which returns to its home in Los Angeles between October 8 and 11, at the ACME Theater.
