Lurking in the background of today’s Jane Jacobs vs. Robert Moses stories is a man who had a little bit of both in his soul.

Recently my wife had to have a minor procedure in the small town hospital. The staff insisted, according to policy, that she be escorted out of the hospital by someone she knows(me) and be driven by car home. This is despite the fact that the bus stops right outside the hospital.
I contacted the CEO about this who passed me off to other administrators. In any event I finally spoke to the Vice President, Patient Services, and Chief Nursing Executive. She agreed with me coming from a city background that that is not the case in the city. She also agreed , I think, that the car is implicated with poor health in North America. She pointed out that it is important to see the patient off safely after any procedure to which I replied that cars are not inherently safe.
The upshot of this is the hospital is going to change it's policy and allow patients to take the bus home if escorted by someone. The patient may have to wait an additional half hour more than car driven patients for "safety" reasons.

a small victory in this car centered culture
