Noodles & New Urbanism, an irreverent monthly meetup focusing on human-scale urban development, is sponsoring a fundraiser group hike on Saturday, September 12th. This hike will be accompanied by Seth Smigelski, founder of hikespeak.com <http://www.hikespeak.com/>. Hikespeak lists hikes all over the world, with a special focus on wildland walks easily reachable from urban centers, often by public transit. The New Urbanism Film Festival, based in Los Angeles, is now in its 3rd year of hosting screenings, discussions, and events aimed at getting the general public more involved in urban planning. This hike is a fundraiser for the Festival.
About the Hike
While Los Angeles has a reputation for congested highways, it also has the most parkspace within city limits. The hike comprises an exploration of Griffith Park, starting at the Carousel and ending at the abandoned zoo.
Discover the little-known east side of Griffith Park during this approximately five mile walk. The group will visit some great spots in the park like Beacon Hill, Bee Rock, and Old Zoo Picnic Area. Meet at the large parking area near the carousel. The 96 Bus has a stop near there, so those mass transit folks can get to the trail pretty easily as well.
$20 for the hike; $35 donation for the hike + lunch by Twist Eatery.
âThis hike will be more than a fundraiser,â said Paget. âThe walk will reveal part of the wild heritage of Los Angeles, taking us through a site filled with urban history and connections to the LA River, the indigenous inhabitants of the region, and outsized personalities from LA's past, such as William Mulholland and Col. Griffith J. Griffith, who donated the park to the city.â

About the New Urbanism Film Festival: The New Urbanism Film Festival is a four day immersion in documentary films, events, tours, workshops and conversations, one that opens meaningful dialogues about revitalizing neighborhoods and cities as walkable, healthy, diverse, thriving places. Planners, developers, architects, engineers, public officials, investors, community activists and the general public work and play together to explore better ways of building citiesâor rebuilding them. The films come from around the planet, documenting everything from city-wide projects to individual DIY deals that make the world better one corner at a time. Don't miss the third annual New Urbanism Film Festival, which returns to its home in Los Angeles between October 8 and 11, at the ACME Theater.
