At a time when public infrastructure investment is falling short, freight railroads are privately investing billions each year to maintain, upgrade and build their own infrastructure network.

Hi all. What seems often to be missing from the road-rail debates I've heard (e.g. at Asian Development Bank) is how much more efficient train engines are than truck/bus, and the difference between steel wheels on tracks vs. rubber on asphalt... As I understand rail involves a much higher up-front investment and saves vast amounts over the lifespan...as well of course as saving so much in terms of traffic fatalities, space/land, and on environmental concerns.

This is correct. Rail freight uses about 25% of the energy of road freight, and it is a comparatively simple matter to run trains on electricity, which also gives further savings in the form of recovering braking energy (in some systems).
